Individually and collectively we are facing more than a technical or human systems crisis in the knowledge that we have, and still are, creating a global climate meltdown through the continued expansion of a fossil fueled, industrial revolution driven, global capitalist consumption economy.

We have to manage the Baboon level of our society in a way that decreases the effectiveness of violence as a tool for achieving social rank and control. Male baboons use violence to establish rank within the male hierarchy of their baboon troop.

I have been impressed with how out of touch and reckless the elites of our day have become. It is as if they do not see themselves as part of the world around them. This in turn causes them to dramatically over estimate their power and value which leads to tragic lapses in judgment. It is most obvious in the behavior of the Bush administration and the Republican party but seems more deeply rooted than a political movement.

Bob Dylan’s song, All Along the Watchtower, contemplates a crisis approaching on the horizon, where rapid action is required, and most people are blind to the rapidly approaching peril. Global warming and man made climate change fit that pattern, so lets start a conversation using Dylan’s images and poetry as a backdrop.
