Clinton Voters in Texas More Likely to Support Down Ballot Candidates

One of the most consistent arguments being made to support Obama as the 2008 nominee for president is that he brings many first time voters who will also support other democratic candidates on the ballot. Apparently that is not true in Texas at least. From dallasnews.com:

Backers of both Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton turned out with passionate support for their candidate in last week's Texas primary. But once they got in the voting booth, they did something different.

Obama supporters were more likely to vote in the presidential race and then skip the other contests than Clinton supporters, who tended to continue voting down the ballot, a Dallas Morning News analysis finds.

This will probably come as quite a shock to Obama supporters who have been making the opposite argument for months. According to the survey some of the drop off down ballot was substantial.

In Dallas County, where Mr. Obama got nearly two-thirds of the vote, the falloff was nearly 30 percent.

If Obama is the nominee and these statistics carry over to November, this would be particularly bad news for democrats in Texas hoping to elect Rick Noriega to the US Senate.
