Thank goodness for photoshop

Thank goodness for photoshop - it made possible a picture that probably wouldn't have been possible any other way, I suspect.
There's something about the way the focus works there that is perfect, and I think what you are talking about, Angelides being slightly out of focus, but in focus too (sharpened by you) is part of what is so magically perfect about that picture!

As for beaming, it makes me beam - a really special work of art always does that to me!

I totally appreciate all

I totally appreciate all your kind words. I'm beaming at the screen!

The depth of field looks greater than it really is, because the autofocus locked on the background, and Phil Angelides was slightly out of focus. I sharpened him up a little in Photoshop, and there wasn't a lot of detail to get lost... just a profile and a very basic dark suit.

Thankyou for the kind

Thankyou for the kind compliment! And I apologize for gushing, but I am very moved by that image. If I ran an art gallery, that image alone would make me very much want you to do a show in my gallery. I can't explain what moves me about it, so I just keep gushing!! It strikes me as a very deep, evocative and moving statement, not just about Angelides or about the Democratic Party in California (though I follow you on all that), but about politics in general.

Also, I don't know much about cameras, but your depth of field seems amazing!

Yeah, I made the photo of

Yeah, I made the photo of Phil on the crates. The video guys put him up there to get the Capitol framed in the background. Like everything else about Phil's campaign, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for it, and it was still silly.

Security kept me backed off about 200 feet, but I had a 400mm lens in my bag, and as soon as I saw Phil Angelides on that ad hoc plinth, I was determined to get the shot, or die trying.

Thanks for the compliment, epppie. It means a lot coming from someone who has made so many outstanding political images.

Did you take that picture,

Did you take that picture, the one in the post? It really is a very special photograph. Both are good, but the one where Angelides is standing on the boxes is, honestly, one of the best political pictures I've ever seen.

I was walking into the state

I was walking into the state Capitol in Sacramento to agitate on a totally unrelated issue, and there was Phil Angelides in the middle of a video picnic! What you can't see in the picture is his squeaky voice and huge ears.

What a great picture, though! That's more priceless than a lifetime of Arnielator films!
