Of course, the media are

Of course, the media are trying to have it both ways. Gustav was weak (implied message: Global Warming isn't real) and there was only some flooding (implied message: the Bush administration did a wonderful job on the levees).

I see it as the usual media snow job: take the facts and turn them on their heads. In fact, as I understand it, Gustav was a very strong storm that weakened (which does nothing to detract from concerns about global warming) and the levees failed to prevent flooding EVEN THOUGH the Bush administration has had three years to fix them and upgrade them AND Gustav weakened (which implies that had Gustav not weakened or if another hurricane hits that is stronger, yet another catastrophe could ocurr in New Orleans, and once again the Bush administration has pretty much just wildly thrown the dice as its approach to policy).

The insecurity of the Bees

The insecurity of the Bees is shared by many creatures.

Thank you for this excellent posting.

This just came out recently:Virus called chief suspect in bee deaths.

I agree that a variety of factors are stressing out the bees. And the Bears. And the Birds. And the Fish. And the Frogs. I've compiled a database that searches for a good selection of environmental Abstracts if you enter environment as the search term. It also searches well for gonzales, torture, illegal searches, unconstitutional presidential power, and so on.

Alex

My favorite "drop in the ocean" of good news for the planet is #4, Bob Geldof's Big Idea for Africa.

Fuel from plant seeds for a starving continent. Hurrah! Brilliant!

Isn't there another "Irish rocker" besides Bob Geldof who has lots of genius ideas for saving Africa? It's all part of...

The New 3-Step Plan to Build a Band in Dublin.
1. Record demo.
2. Publish Comprehensive Cosmic Africa Salvation Manifesto.
3. Await Nobel Prize.

Well...

Let's not completely lose perspective.

Most scientists think we have about a 10-year window to still mitigate (not prevent!) global warming. Would that we had acted when scientists first warned us, but we didn't. Now we have about 10 years. And we have a great deal of what it takes already ready to go. We just have to do it.

I recommend two books to you. First read Jared Diamond's excellent (must read!) book Collapse. It analyzes the collapse of civilizations in general, including the very phenomenon you talk about, the rich assuming they can weather it and the poor taking the brunt. But it also analyzes what we are doing now and what we can do to avoid collapse. THe one thing he emphasizes is that with good political leadership, most societies can weather anything...of course the flip side is with poor leadership survival is unlikely.

Not quite so excellent, but still good, and more directly focused on America and American politics, is John and Terese Heinz Kerry's new book This Moment on Earth. It discusses people and companies and cities in America that are already taking the necessary steps to solve problems. WE don't have to start from scratch. We have the beginnings of solutions already in action.

Energy policy, including energy efficiency and alternative energy, and forests are what we need to focus on. Those are the two things that can do the best to mitigate global warming while having MANY other economic and environmental benefits.

And for my personal take on some of this please see this diary on Political Cortex, and this one and this one on Culture Kitchen.
