Saint Jerome and the LIon

Saint Jerome is one of my favorite subjects in the history of painting. I think painters have always loved him because he combines so many interesting themes in a way that seems natural. As a Saint, and a Doctor of the Church, Saint Jerome represents the life of the mind. Yet he is always depicted with a Lion, whom he befriended by removing a thorn from his paw (like Daniel!), so he also represents wholeness, the idea of life of the mind, of tending to the spirit, as not being a thing divorced from the strength of the body or the passion of the instincts.

My favorite image of Saint Jerome is by Durer:

We Are Virginia Tech -- Nikki Giovanni

Religion Fails -- Virginia Tech

Like many, I watched the Virginia Tech Convocation today. This is what I heard: Representatives from some of the world's major religions spoke. Islam -- I was not comforted, just uncomfortable at the fatalism. Buddhism -- the words of the Dalai Lama were good. Judaism -- reciting Ecclesiastes... "there is a time for mourning and a time to be comforted"... this was good, until it came to the part "there is a time to make war"... no comfort there. Generic Christianity... this was ok. At this point a man in the second row behind the President broke down unconsolably. The President reached back to put a supporting hand on the man... that was good. The Dean of Students spoke, the head of the Mental Health counselling services spoke... There was an emptiness, shock, horror... a terrible bewilderment, bereavement loss, and despair...

The Graphic Work of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

If you visit KurtVonnegut.com you'll find just one of his images... the bird cage with the open door. An appropriate image for a sad commemoration.

Artists Are Losers ...... NSFW

Battle Between Carnival & Lent (for Bill Donohue)

A graphic rant against the Catholic League's war on art and artists.

I thought I got it out of my system when I wrote "Following the Naked Christ" in a tone I thought was most objective. But the ire in me rose and I thought of Brueghel's "The Battle Between Carnival and Lent" So I figured I'd paint a picture of this modern battle, pitting the modern day Savonarola that is Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League versus the sculptor Cosimo Callavaro.
