Thursday's Service Presidential Forum

Thursday night the presidential candidates talked about their views on service.

Obama: "America is the greatest country on earth, but it didn't just happen on its own. It is not a gift only.... it is a responsibility."

This has been a key component of the Obama campaign from the very beginning. If you remember his acceptance speech during the Democratic Convention his line "We are the ones we've been waiting for" is key in his belief that Americans can solve the difficult challenges we face with millions of hands working together.

Labor issues are very important to me. That's why, a few months ago, I contacted both of my U.S. Senators to ask them to support the Employee Free Choice Act when it comes before the Senate.

It took quite some time, but I eventually heard back from U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr. The only problem is, his reply didn't address the EFCA. At all.

In my experience, most "netroots" progressives are the kind of people who follow the national news. They're likely to already know who's running for President on both the Democratic and Republican sides. They're likely to know who's running for Congress, Senate, or Governor in not only their own state, but also states half way across the country. They're likely to have contributed money to a candidate, or to have spent time working for one (or more) themselves.

A CANCER ON OUR NATION

There is a cancer growing on our nation...a cancer that threatens our very existence as a civil society. It is not poverty, illegal immigration, and inadequate healthcare, failing public education or even terrorism. All these can be conquered if we can work together and pool our resources, but that is precisely where our cancer grows.
