Truth, Justice, and the American Way

No Associated Press content was harmed in the writing of this post

Prairie Weather inspired this week's post. I have been unsuccessfully trying to write about what may be a vast, unexamined record of wrongdoing from the administration, and a brief exchange started by PW finally got me unstuck. Stuart Taylor Jr. has argued for pardons, Cass Sunstein agrees and Victoria Toensing has added (via) her own dubious logic to the drumbeat. A consensus has developed among political and media elites that no good purpose would be served by enforcing the law(!) and so for the sake of a smooth transfer of power and a calming of the political waters in the capitol we must let it all pass.

Rape in the Military:

No commentary need be added, the below speaks for itself, and more can be found if interested.

Congress Charges Cover-Up

Congress takes on the Department of Defense in the first oversight hearing held this year by the subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs on sexual assault in the military. Dr. Kaye Whitley, Director of Sexual Assault and Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) failed to show at the hearing despite being subpoenaed. Her "no show" left some members accusing the DOD of a cover up.

Daddy Dearest

think the North Central coast of New Zealand’s North Island is as close to paradise as you are likely to find. We don’t know for certain why Captain Cook called it “The Bay of Plenty” in 1769. But at the port of Taurange, a three hour drive south from Auckland, the average low temperature in the winter (March through August) is a cool 41F, and the average high in the summer is a pleasant 75F. During the winter rainy season the average rainfall is only 4 to 5 inches a month. And even though its beach lined coast is bisected by the Taupo Volcanic Zone, with its northern terminus of White Island, one of the most accessible and active, explosive volcanoes in the world, a mere 30 miles off the coast, there is nothing in the geological history to indicate that this resort region has anything particular to fear from Mother Nature. The violence and the fireworks of this land are merely harmless backdrops. Or at least they were until 45 year old James Bowring went on the prowl.

Not So Sweet In Poteet

I can’t think of any place in America farther from Washington, D.C. than Poteet, Texas, zip code 78065. The little farming town is 20 miles south of San Antonio, and less than 70 miles north of the Rio Grande. Poteet has a population of just 3,500, while the 20010 zip code, the central core our nation’s capital, is home to over 26,000 people, more than seven times the population of Poteet. D.C.’s population is about 57% African-American, while Poteet’s is 88% Hispanic, which in south Texas is called “White”. Average household income in the urban 20010 is $36,000 a year, while in rural Poteet the average income for a family is only $25,000. Poteet is known as the strawberry capital of Texas, while D.C. seems to grow nothing but a lot of hot air and red tape. Officially the 20010 zip has 26 registered sex offenders, a ratio of about 895 to one, while tiny rural religious Poteet has 29 registered sex offenders, a ratio of about 125 to one. Now, either something very odd is going on in Poteet or we are completely mistaken about what we think we know about sex offenders; who they are, what they do, and how to stop them from doing it again.

Pointing Out the Monsters among the Sheep

Pointing Out the Monsters among the Sheep
By David Glenn Cox

They beat a 14-year-old child to death for a minor offense and the law says they did no wrong. Emmett Till was 14 when he was beaten to death in Mississippi back in 1955. He had supposedly whistled at a white woman but that minor offense carried a death sentence. Martin Lee Anderson had stolen his grandmother’s car and was sentenced to boot camp where he was executed for his crime.

How acquittal was the right outcome for a guilty defendant.

I completed jury duty today. It was interesting to watch how the ordinary wheels of justice turn - while the specialized wheels for Libby were turning in Wash, D.C. If Justice had suddenly taken off her blindfold in our nation's capitol and peeked at the answer key for the correct result, was that happening in the rest of the country - in my own little county courthouse? And why do I feel like it doesn't matter anyway?

The Duke Lacrosse Case and Its Extensions Used by Republicans and Their Enablers

It looks like the Duke Lacrosse Players will be vindicated, I for one am glad. From the get go it looked like all there was against them was an accusation made

Prosecutors have decided to drop all charges against three Duke lacrosse players accused of sexually assaulting a stripper at a team party, a person close to the case told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

I mentioned this in a post in the past, but I’ll repeat it; an accusation is not proof. To accuse is not synonymous with to prove.

I hope the Duke Lacrosse players will be able to continue their lives as though none of this had ever happened. We all know that won’t be the case. There will be books, and speaking invites. They will become the recent most prominent example of injustice, to be cited by those trying to discredit those who seek justice.

Smokescreens and Bullshit

Reefer Madness in 21st Century UK.

A new medical classification of cannabis as less harmful than tobacco or alcohol - and alcohol being rated as dangerous as heroin - along with a lurid double murder involving a man claiming pot smoking made him do it has the UK all abuzz about the "danger" of pot.

This is some gnarly BS, so put on your hip waders and take the plunge!

Ms. Angel Raich is a long-term and terminally-ill medical cannabis patient from California.

She was arrested a couple years ago when the DEA raided a medical marijauna treatment program/hospice in California, known as WAMM.

Now they want to make her life even more miserable. They want to kill her.
