June 3rd Election in California: Some Progressive Candidates

On June 3rd there is a primary election in California. Primaries are our chance to make the Democratic Party more progressive, an opportunity too often missed. Progressive Majority is an organization that recruits, trains and helps elect progressive democrats in local elections. They have one of the best success rates of any progressive grassroots organizations (about 50%) and recently won big in Arizona and Wisconsin.

Way back 1912, when Hiram Johnson founded the Progressive Party, the jewel of their platform was initiative and referendum, most prominently implemented in California, allowing a sufficient number of voters to unite and write propositions directly onto the ballot. This populist triumph was supposed to be all about "good government," but it wasn't.

It was all about money.

GOP Uses Sleazy Peitition Drive To Launch Effort To Steal 2008 Presidential Election

When I lived in California years and years ago, I once encountered a petition pusher who was trying to get me to sign a GOP-inspired initiative while disguising it as something else.
I forget what the initiative was all about, but I do remember the petition pusher trying to weakfully defend the legitimacy of his campaign before saying to me, "at least get it on the ballot."

The effort by California Republicans to steal the 2008 presidential election by ending the state's winner-take-all electoral votes system has fallen apart, at least for now.
