Sexist Type-Casting by Barack and Michelle Obama

It's hard to imagine a more macho headline: Obama Warns GOP "Lay Off My Wife."

"But I do want to say this to the GOP. If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful. Because that I find unacceptable," he said.

This is after Michelle Obama has already made dozens of solo campaign appearances without Big Strong Barack riding along to "protect" her. The Republicans are attacking Michelle Obama for her remark about the first time she was ever proud of America, which she made at a regular campaign event, and Mr. Obama responded as if one of his children had been attacked for watching Sesame Street.

But Michelle Obama is one of the most prominent figures in Obama's campaign for the Presidency. There is no conceivable reason why she should be immune to criticism from Republicans when she is campaigning against McCain every day... unless it's because she's a woman, unless it's because she's a wife, unless it's because she's a mommy, and everybody knows that only a villain would attack a mommy.

Barack Obama wasn't "defending his wife." He was putting her in a "protected category," along with his children, and that's exactly the category that women have been trying to get out of for the last hundred years.

When this skit played on ABC, Obama was campaigning in Montana and maybe it's just what all those reliably Republican ranchers wanted to hear:

Leave the women and children out of this, and let us men fight it out among ourselves.

I have to give Michelle Obama credit for reacting to this ludicrous charade like a normal human being, while the half-witted hosts of Good Morning America ate it up.

"But I also think these folks should lay off my wife," he told "GMA" as his wife chuckled beside him.

"...as his wife chuckled beside him." But even if she couldn't keep a straight face for Obama's pony-ride into the Wild West, Michelle still played along and hit her marks on cue.

Michelle Obama had a lot of praise for Clinton -- as first lady. "I think the world of Hillary Clinton. Particularly, as a woman, having watched her go through a lot of what I might be going through, and doing it with a level of grace, and raising a phenomenal daughter, which I have two girls," Michelle Obama said.

Isn't it wonderful that Michelle Obama identifies with Hillary Clinton "as a woman" and sympathizes with her as one First Lady to another!

Put Hillary Clinton back in her place as the White House housekeeper-in-chief, throw in a little "protective" posturing from Barack, and give the Obamas an Oscar for sexist type-casting!

And in case it wasn't already obvious enough for a hockey puck to get the message, Michelle and Barack staged a tiny argument about the children.

Should the kids get a dog? Barack said they needed  "a year to test whether they are sufficiently responsible..."

But Michelle Obama cut him off, saying, "They are responsible."

Michelle wins the argument about the children! The woman rules the household, while the man protects her and takes care of business, and if Hillary Clinton finally drops out of the race for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, maybe the Obamas can give her an ironing board for a consolation prize.
