Slogans and a Big Smile Won't Unify the Democrats

I remember how Barack Obama promoted unity in the Democratic Party, way back when it really mattered.

When Bill Clinton was slandered as a racist, for recalling that Jesse Jackson had won the Democratic primary in South Carolina once or twice...

I remember Barack Obama's thunderous denunciation of this ridiculous character assassination!

"Do you idiots think the KKK marches down the street chanting "Jesse Jackson won the South Carolina primary!" Do you idiots think white supremacists denigrate black people by screaming "Jesse Jackson won the South Carolina primary!" Enough of this abject hate-mongering! I don't play "gotcha" politics! I'm Barack Obama!"

Barack Obama would never send surrogates out to do his dirty work and pretend to be totally innocent himself, the way George W. Bush sent surrogates out to do his dirty work and pretended to be totally innocent himself, so...

That's why we have a unified party today, and there isn't one chance in a million that we could lose to John McCain in the general election!

But if Barack Obama had run the most racially divisive campaign in the history of the Democratic Party, and encouraged every sleazy rumor about Hillary Clinton that his army of fanatics could dredge up, then we would be in the kind of trouble that slogans and a big smile can't fix.
