"Straight Talk Express" Loses Two More Wheels.

John McCain lost two top level advisers today as his campaign manager and chief strategist announced their resignations from the campaign. From USA Today online:

"This morning I informed Senator McCain that I would be resigning from his presidential campaign, effective immediately," says Terry Nelson, McCain's campaign manager. "It has been a tremendous honor to serve Senator McCain and work on his campaign. I believe John McCain is the most experienced and prepared candidate to represent the Republican Party and defeat the Democratic nominee next year."

and

"As of today, I have resigned my position as chief strategist to John McCain's presidential campaign," says John Weaver, the "chief strategist" who has been advising the senator since the 2000 campaign. "It has been my honor and a distinct privilege to serve someone who has always put our country first. I believe that most Americans will come to the conclusion that I have long known there is only one person equipped to serve as our nation's chief executive and deal with the challenges we face, and that person is John McCain."

McCain released this statement about the resignations also from USA Today online:

"Today, John Weaver and Terry Nelson offered their resignations from my presidential campaign, which I accepted with regret and deep gratitude for their dedication, hard work and friendship. Terry is a consummate professional, who has ably lead this campaign through a challenging political environment. John Weaver has been my friend and trusted counselor for many years and to whom I am greatly indebted. In the days and weeks ahead this campaign will move forward, and I will continue to address the issues of greatest concern to the American people, laying out my vision for a secure and prosperous America."

It goes without saying that this is a very serious setback to McCain's presidential aspirations. His campaign was already having serious difficulty raising money. This will only exacerbate the situation. Of course everyone involved will try to put a positive spin on it but this looks like the beginning of the end for McCain and possibly the final door opening for Fred Thompson to enter.

There's something very sad

There's something very sad about this story. McCain really was a straight talker for a long time, and his weird loyalty to Bush turned him into something else. After what Bush did to him in South Carolina in 2000, I can't understand any of it.

Unfortunately, he wanted to

Unfortunately, he wanted to be president "in the worst way". The lesson he learned from South Carolina was that he needed to pander to the conservative right if he wanted to get the nomination, but that made him something else. I use to think that McCain was the only republican that I could find some agreement with (he seemed like a Teddy Roosevelt republican), but now I have no idea what he stands for.

My husband and I were

My husband and I were discussing McCain this morning. I used to like him. You could at one time look to him to do what was right for the vets, the disadvantaged. A lot of the republicans couldn't stand him because they said he was more Democrat then he was republican.

He's changed though. My husband said it right, he sold his soul to be President.

I don't know if you were

I don't know if you were around then, but after George McGovern lost his race in 1972 he gave a speech to his supporters in which he said something like, I wanted to be president in the worst way but Richard Nixon has already done that. I always think of that phrase when I see someone like McCain. McGovern may have lost in a landslide but he is still the same person today with the same values and integrity. I really admire that in him. We need more people like that in office today for sure.

BTW welcome to Diatribune

I was only 11 then so I

I was only 11 then so I don't recall the particulars with McGovern's campaign. I do know that we're lacking in politicians with integrity and I think it's due to the money factor. Seems that everyone shifts to where they think the money is.

And thank you for the welcome.
