I've made no secret about my like of Rick Noriega and his battle for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. One of Noriega's opponents, Mikal Watts, is also working to get the nod, but his explanations on his giving to some Texas Republicans are very troubling.
Here's part of one blogger's account of a recent Watts campaign visit to Victoria, Texas:
Someone else asked about the donations he had made to Rick Perry, David Dewhurst, and Greg Abbott. He answered this question more directly. He said he had made the donations through a trial lawyer PAC because the courts had just (I'm paraphrasing here) "closed up", and the donations were an attempt to get more access to the judicial system. Although he did not give correct figures, he pooh-poohed the amounts given by the questioner ($25K to Perry, $20K to Dewhurst, and $15K to Abbott). He also said that overall, he thinks he's given $3.5 million, the vast majority to Dems.
Can Watts please explain how donations to Republicans like Perry, Dewhurst, and Abbott "get more access" to the judicial system? Oh, as far as more access, more access to who?
I'm not entirely downing Watts, who's given far, far money to Democrats (and should be applauded for that), but while I think he'd be miles and miles of a better U.S. Senator for Texas than that disease of an incumbent we now have in John Cornyn, his giving to Republicans and his explanation of his gifts raises far more questions than answers.
