The mind reels.
I came across a video, hosted by the notorious Bible-thumper Pat Robertson that, with the straightest of faces, discusses how an American highway called Interstate 35 (or I-35), which stretches from Laredo Texas to Duluth Minnesota, completely bisecting America, is possibly "highway" referenced in Isaiah 35.
They believe I-35 is part of scriptural prophecy and, among other things, it can cure homosexuality.
Video and commentary after the leap of Faith.
Brace yourselves: I could only watch this in short segments without retching - even with some pre-treatment with a strong anti-emetic. (I recommend you do the same, if possible.)
It seems like comedy, but these folks are completely serious.
We want a Holy Nation!
More detail from the CBN video transcript
A number of Christians have come to believe that because of recent prophecies, dreams, and visions I-35 is the highway spoken of in Isaiah 35, verse 8 -- "And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness."
.
The first of these prophetic dreams came to a prominent German prophet in 1984. Prophetic intercessor Cindy Jacobs of Generals International told CBN News, "And in this dream he saw a highway that went from the bottom of someplace to the top that had a '35' sign on it. And God showed him that revival was going to begin at the bottom of this highway and go to the top.
.
Many other prophecies followed. Jeff Baldwin, college and career pastor at Dallas' Heartland World Ministries Church, said, "There've been very specific cities given in these prophetic words, and they say, 'Go to these cities and cry out for holiness and purity, and I'll come down and I'll invade.' And all those cities were along the I-35 corridor."
"Purity Sieges" are converting homosexuals and rescuing lost souls from a life of drugs addiction and general debauchery, from Texas to Duluth as "On Fire Christians are moving out" to shut down abortion clinics and adult video stores. And try to influence the law and eviscerate the Constitution.
"We're crying out for abortion to be overturned, and marriage between one man and one woman, and for the heart of pornography to be ripped out in this nation.the same for drugs and prostitution. We want a holy nation!" Jacobs and Hill call these gatherings Purity Sieges.
Religious fundamentalists of every color and stripe use that line. It really means a fascist theocracy.
A Purity Siege can be described as a spiritual demonstration. In much the same way people protest against governmental or business aspects of society, Youth across the nation will “siege” sites of impurity in their city, by doing on-location prayer. They will be protesting the machinations of evil, such as pornography, injustice, abortion, and other strongholds. They will stand outside of spiritual strongholds and visually demonstrate their opposition thereof, while doing warfare in heavenly realm.
The link references a number of cities which have been treated to this special attention. And yeah, they will want to come to a town near you...soon.
Dallas church takes holy patrol along I-35
The idea of a program called "Light the Highway" is prayer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Christians at a Dallas church, Heartland World Ministry, said they believe I-35 actually has biblical meaning.
.
"There are lots of great highways in America, but let's start somewhere; and Highway 35, Isaiah 35:8, says that I will build a highway of holiness," said Pastor Stephen Hill. "And the Bible says without holiness, no man will see the Lord."
.
Pastor Hill said he is trying to clean up the streets by encouraging believers to go to 12 cities along the I-35 corridor.

"We are tired of seeing the destruction of what sin has brought on the world," he said. "And so, we believe God has ordained this highway for us to go up and down ... to see lives transformed, to see people revolutionized for God [and] for the betterment of this place."
The I-35: Highway of Holiness Movement is upon us!
I-35: Highway of Holiness is a movement birthed out of God's own heart. As a response to prophecies given by Cindy Jacobs and Sam Brassfield, and inspired by Scripture, Generals International is establishing an international project called Light The Highway. Light The Highway is an attempt to create places where God's Kingdom is established by operating in holiness along high-traffic roadways. God desires geographic areas where He can freely move, and it is the responsibility of each of us to forge such spaces. You can do this by committing to live in holiness, and by joining with others along your highways to do the same. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit, we have begun a movement to see “our highway,” Interstate 35, become a Highway of Holiness. If you would like to share with us how you are lighting I-35, or if you are interested in participating in this, please visit our website LightTheHighway.org.
And, amazingly enough, there's a Special highway 35 in Israel as well!
Recently, we discovered a highway 35 that runs through the heart of Israel. A number of locations along this central route have enormous historical and spiritual significance. Plans are being made to "light" this highway as well, and bring the Messiah to Israel.
That's right: these people STILL want to "take Jesus to the Jews".
Why is it so hard for Jews to believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah? Vermillion gives two reasons: 1) they’ve never heard the Gospel clearly explained; and, 2) most Jews feel that Jews who accept Christ are traitors to their religion and culture.
.
“Of course, Jews who accept Jesus are not traitors to their religion,” Vermillion says. “That’s just not true. If anything, being a follower of the greatest Jew who ever lived would make a Jew even more Jewish, not less.
.
“What we are really excited about is that as we have been able to share the Gospel with the Jewish people, especially focusing on secular and unaffiliated Jews, there has been an incredible openness and responsiveness,” Vermillion said, stressing that half of the Jewish population not only is secular and unaffiliated, but perhaps even one or two generations removed from the synagogue.
To make a long winded rant very short, these "Christians" are very, very short on reality testing and are gleefully oblivious to just how insulting their actions are to many, many people.
Particularly The Jews (and this is from 1999 - these folks are willfully ignorant)
Don Kammerdiener, International Mission Board executive vice-president, said Southern Baptists are obligated to pray for Jews. "Jesus stated clearly that his followers were to begin their witness to him in Jerusalem, the heartland of the Jews.... Obedient Christians have no choice except to invite Jews and all other peoples to come to faith in Christ."
.
But what Southern Baptists view as love and obligation, Jews regard as disrespectful and inciteful. "We are shocked and deeply offended by the call ... to pray that Jews will convert to Christianity during the High Holy Days," said Abraham H. Foxman, Anti-Defamation League national director. "It is pure arrogance for any one religion to assume that they hold `the truth,' especially on the eve of the holiest days for the Jewish faith." In a letter to Paige Patterson, SBC president, Foxman said the prayer call "projects a message of spiritual narrowness that invites theological hatred."
Alas, these folks revel in and thrive upon ignorance, specifically defined as a willful ignorance of reality and the rights of others.
They are on a mission, they're "on fire" and sooner or later they'll want to shout "Fire!" at you. Because they are Righteous and you're a sinner.
These people are anti-choice, anti-science, and anti-common sense.
Their good intentions are going to pave a road, all right, but it ain't leading where they think it will.

When I was 19 I hitched from Dallas to St. Paul MN, I 35 the whole way and I met some real characters, but nothing like you're describing here. Apparently I missed some things.

They are so weird, I often wonder if John Ashcroft would think they are weird. He's damn weird, but not as much as these folks and their road delusion.
Dabbin' some Crisco on yer noggin as an anointment really seems trivial compared to thinking that a modern highway is mentioned in the Bible.
These are doubtlessly ID/Creationists too.
