Why cannabis culture should support Barack Obama for President.

Crossposted from GreenState Project

I am off the fence: the decision is made.

It's not Ron Paul.

Brief discussion after the flip.

I am choosing Barack Obama.

The reasons are as follows

  • The race has narrowed to 2 folks.
  • Obama is less antagonsitic to medical marijuana.

My Choice was Dennis Kucinich, but he wasn't "viable" and dropped out.

I then was undecided among the Big Three, but as John Edwards began to get snubbed by the media for his intense focus on healthcare I was gravitating to him.

Now he is out of the race and it's an either-or situation.

Clinton is just not going to deal with relegalization

when MSNBC's Tim Russert asked the Democratic candidates last October if they opposed decriminalizing marijuana, Clinton raised her hand, as did the others in the debate except for Christopher Dodd and Dennis Kucinich. (Obama's hand went up somewhat hesitantly; according to the Washington Times, he told students at Northwestern University in 2004 that he supported decriminalization but not legalization.)

Of course

Both Clinton and Obama say they will end federal raids on medical marijuana users and lift the ban on federal funding of needle-exchange programs. And both have spoken about alternatives to mass incarceration, such as increased drug treatment.

The key phrase here is "spoken about".

By now, one ought to know that "spoken about" in the same sentence with political promises means "don't hold your breath, sucker".

It all boils down to the idea that Obama is slighty...ever so slightly less-intent on maintaining the status qou across a spectrum of issues - not simply cannabis reform.

Indeed, Obama's jittery at best about his perspectives on this, but I think...I think he is not committed to the war on drugs. It's not part of an ideology for him.

He evades the questions because it remains a "third rail" sort of topic, entirely because of the GOP and the media. THEY have the agenda to keep this travesty rolling forward.

Here's an analogy:

America is still completely asleep when it comes to fixing the war on drugs and cannabis prohibition.
Flat on it's back, in bed, snoring loudly with the alarm clock going off.
The best it usually does is hit the alarm clock.
Obama represents the potential to get one toe out of the bed and onto the floor.

That is hope.

I'm voting Obama on Super Tuesday and I encourage cannabis culture to consider doing so as well.
